About 20 Ave Maria University students slept on bricks in cardboard shelters Saturday night as part of a Lenten effort to better understand the plight of the poor and homeless. Above, students building their shelters.
"It was a really great experience of solidarity both with the poor and with each other," said organizer Paul Nurse, an AMU student who heads the AMU Mary's Meals effort, part of an international Catholic organization that fights global poverty by serving school meals to children in developing countries.
Earlier in the evening, the students collected canned goods for Guadalupe Social Services in Immokalee and heard reflection by Fr. Paulo on serving the poor.
Among the goals of the AMU group are to sponsor a "sister school" in Malawi by the end of the semester, Right, Heather Esker, an AMU junior, trying out her accommodation for the night.
"It definitely gave us the opportunity to reflect on how blessed we are to have a roof over our heads and how important it is to lend a hand to those in need," Mr. Nurse said.
