A lot of speed, and much creativity, was in evidence Saturday at the 2nd running of the Ave Maria Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby.
After all the brightly-colored, unique cars had run several heats racing down an aluminum track set up in the ballroom of the AMU student union, 5th grader Luke Klein took home the honors for the fastest car. The pinewood derby is an annual tradition for cub scouts throughout the United States. The Ave Maria scouts were given blocks of wood in December, and each scout worked with his parents to design and make his own car.
Although many scouts opted for the traditional race-car design, many chose to make different types of vehicles, such as the Popemobile pictured at left, the work of Samuel, JohnPaul and Tim Moore. JohnPaul placed second in the Tiger Den group.
This year's event also included a popular "Over the Hill" race for parents who wanted to compete. Martin Doman took first place followed by Gabriel Martinez and Chris Buccheri.
Other awards for the fastest cars went to:
Tiger Den (1st graders): Jack Imbus (1st), JohnPaul Moore (2nd) (pictured below right, Jack Imbus is on the right with grandrfather Don and JohnPaul on the right with father Tim)
Wolf Den (2nd graders): Joseph Burke (1st), Bradley Imbus (2nd), Michael Buccheri (3rd)
Bear Den (3rd graders): Joseph Ritter (1st), Jacob Doman (2nd), Noah Northon (3rd)
Webelos 1 Den (4th graders): Elijah Ritter (1st), Joaquin Martinez (2nd), Benedict Niewald (3rd)
Webelos 2 Den (fifth graders): Luke Klein (1st), Joseph Doman (2nd)
