Life in Ave Maria is a little sweeter now that the Scoopz ice cream parlor is open in the Ave Maria town center.
Owner Helen Altomari and others behind the counter served up scoop after scoop Friday and Saturday to a steady stream of residents, visitors and students who stopped in to sample some of the dozens of flavors and an array of toppings.
"The opening was amazing," a thrilled Mrs. Altomari said. "Thank you to the wonderful people of Ave who have been so very supportive." Right, owner Helen Altomari greets Rory and Marie Campbell, among her first customers (photo by Erin Campbell).
The opening has been eagerly anticipated as Mrs. Altomari and her contractor, Michael Mastandrea, navigated the byzantine Collier County permitting process that pushed opening day several months later than expected.
But judging by the reactions of those who stopped in the shop, it was worth waiting for.
The most popular flavor so far? That, Mrs. Altomari said, would be Bear Claw, a concoction of chocolate ice cream, chocolate covered cashews and caramel.
Scoopz is open from 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and is closed on Sunday.
