World-class triathletes will be coming through Ave Maria Saturday on the bike portion of the Naples HITS Triathlon.
The Naples Triathlon drew about 600 contestants last January, but just a relatively small percentage of them compete in the full triathlon which will begins Saturday morning with a 2.4-mile swim in the Gulf of Mexico, followed by a 112-mile bike race and ending with a 26.2-mile marathon run.
The bike leg of the full triathlon (right) includes a ride from Oil Well Rd. up Ave Maria Blvd., around the oratory and back down to Oil Well Rd. The Ave Maria portion is miles 80-86 on the course, meaning that when the athletes bike past the oratory beginning mid-Saturday morning they still will have about 25 miles of riding and a 26.2-mile run ahead of them.
The Ave Maria local organizer, Bellera resident Joanne Leary -- who competes in a shorter version of the triathlon Sunday -- says about 75 athletes should be riding through Ave Maria starting around 10:30 a.m. til around 1 p.m. Volunteers will be directing traffic to accommodate the racers.
More information on the race is at the HITS website here. Anyone interested in volunteering can sign up here or email Joanne Leary at
