New Illuminated Bible to Be Shown at AMU

bible1aIt has been more than 500 years since a Benedictine Monastery has commissioned the production of an illuminated bible -- a hand-lettered, richly illustrated, gilded version of the holy book.

The opus, which has involved teams of caligraphers and illustrators in Minnesota and Wales for more than 10 years, was commissioned by Saint John's Abbey and University near Minneapolis, MN, and is being executed by Donald Jackson, Senior Scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's Crown Office.
The director of the Herigate Program at St. John's University, David Allaway, will present a lecture on the work Thursday, March 22, at 4:30 p.m. in the Ave Maria University library, to which all are invited.
Ten prints from the 1,150-page work will be shown, and will remain on display at the AMU library until May 7.

The entire St. John's Bible contains all 73 books from the Old and New Testaments using the New Revised Standard Version in seven volumes, each of which weighs about 35 pounds.

The original manuscript will eventually reside at Saint John's University, but a fine-art printed version will be available to the public.
