The Naples Daily News said in an editorial Sunday that it is endorsing Jim Coletta for re-election as county commissioner for District 5, which includes Ave Maria. The newspaper calls Mr. Coletta, who is a long-time supporter of Ave Maria, "a steady hand at the wheel when we need it — through tough times and our delicate economic comeback." Florida Fish and Wildlife officials tried unsuccessfully to trap a bear who had been wandering repeatedly through the downtown area of Ave Maria as well as several other neighborhoods. The bear has not been spotted for more than a week, and may have moved on.

William W. Kirk, a former associate vice president of Residence Life at Notre Dame University, has been hired as AMU's new VP for Student Affairs, University President Jim Towey announced Monday. Mr. Kirk replaces Student Affairs head Dan Dentino, who resigned earlier this summer for personal reasons.

Incumbent District 5 Commissioner Jim Coletta and his Republican primary challenger, Tim Nance, will appear at three candidate forums in the next two weeks -- on July 16, July 19 and July 25. Ave Maria University Economics Professor Joseph Burke will be a panelist at the July 16 forum, moderated by Jeff Lytle of the Naples Daily News, at the University of Florida Extension Office at 14700 Immokalee Rd. near the county fairgrounds.

Clayton Burroughs, a 22-year-old junior who was an original member of the Ave Maria University football team, died Friday morning when the car he was driving left the road on Camp Keais Rd. north of town. He is being remembered on campus as a lively, outgoing, popular student. UPDATE: Funeral services will be held at the Marco Presbyterian Church at 875 West Elkcam Circle, Marco Island, Monday at 5 p.m.

 The first wall of what will be a 190,000-square-foot manufacturing facility for medical device maker Arthrex went up Wednesday morning at the site off Oil Well Rd. The building is scheduled for completion in the spring, 2013, and is expected to employ 500 people by 2016.

 A black bear who has been overturning garbage cans in the Ave Maria town center has gotten bolder, running through the town center in daylight and becoming more of a nuisance. Florida Fish and Wildlife officials say it will be Monday at the earliest before they can take any action.  Shamrock Bank is holding a "meet and greet" Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to introduce itself to the Ave Maria community in advance of its planned branch opening in late August. Bank personnel will be on hand, there will be food and music, and people will be able to tour the branch -- the first time the building has been open to the public since it was finished more than four years ago.
 About 200 people enjoyed the annual Knights of Columbus 4th of July picnic at the Ave Maria water park.

The Supreme Court's health care decision Thursday "did not settle the religious liberty questions" and Ave Maria University will continue its lawsuit opposing mandates that religious institutions provide insurance covering services they find morally offensive, university President Jim Towey said in a statement.
