T
he new issue of the widely-circulated children magazine Highlights for Children has published a poem by Ave Maria resident Catherine Graham, Donahue Academy 2nd-grader who lives in Emerson Park.
"It's very exciting for us," said Catherine's mom, Cassie Graham. "She writes to them all the time."
Highlights for Children says it receives more than 35,000 submissions each year from children all over the world hoping to see their work published.
Catherine's poem appears in the "Your Own Pages" section of the November, 2011 issue. Pictured: Catherine reading to to her younger sisters Lucy, 3 (right) and Emily, 1.
A news release from Higlights for Children says Catherine "can’t completely decide what she wants to be when she grows up, but she knows she would really like to be a mom."
Catherine, 7, is the oldest of five children in the Graham family, which moved to Ave Maria from Wisconsin a little more than a year ago.
Mrs. Graham said that Catherine's poem was submitted to complement a picture the girl drew, and Highlights magazine chose to print just the poem:
The "fairy of fall"
flutters through trees,
making leaves turn golden
and fall down.
