The Donahue Academy Shamrocks hung in against a tough, physical squad from Nicea Academy to win 45-32 in a sixman football game at North Park in Ave Maria. The team held a special half-time tribute (above - see names at end of article) to the eight seniors who have been played all three seasons for the Shamrocks.
Those seniors accounted for six of the Shamrocks seven touchdowns -- three by Gabe Allan, two by Joe Guernsey and one by Jake Schneider. Matt Houde scored the other Donahue TD on a long reception late in the first half. Right, the Shamrocks (in blue) celebrating after one of Allan's TDs)
The win improved Donahue's record this season to 6-1. Nicea has won just once this year, but Shamrocks coach Rich Scanlon said they didn't play like a team with that kind of record.
"I was impressed with how physical they were," he said. "Defensively, they were very tough and they were one of the most physical teams we've played this year. I'm surprised they've won just one game."
Donahue has a bye next week, but will be tested Oct. 20 when they play unbeaten Oasis Christian School in Cape Coral.
