The Ave Maria University Gyrenes came on strong in the second half Saturday afternoon, but lost their first-ever football game 41-19 to Faulkner University in Montgomery, AL.

AMU trailed 32-0 at the half, but took advantage of several Faulkner miscues to outscore Faulkner 19-9 in the second half.

The game drew national media attention because Faulkner placekicker Alan Moore, a 61-year-old grandfather, became the oldest college football player ever when he kicked an extra point in the first half to give Faulkner a 25-0 lead.

The Gyrenes' first home game is Saturday, Sept. 17. The game will be played at noon at Palmetto Ridge High School against Birmingham Southern College, with a tailgate party afterward in the Ave Maria town center.
