The Donahue Academy Shamrocks opened their six-man football season Saturday night in convincing fashion, shutting out league newcomer Golden Rule Academy 35-0 at Golden Rule's home field in Ft. Pierce.
Quarterback Cameron Joyce passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, and Gabe Allan also scored two TDs and Jake Schneider returned an interception for a score and Joe Guernsey caught a touchdown pass.
In addition to the returning standouts from last year, Coach Rich Scanlon also said the team "had great contributions from newcomers Max Randolph, Matt Houde and Joe Towey, who scored on a conversion attempt."
The Shamrocks victory Saturday starts their third season on a winning note after a successful year in 2010 - their first under head coach Rich Scanlon - in which they went 6-1. The league has expanded and so has the schedule, with Donahue slated to play nine games in the regular season. Playoffs will be held Nov. 11 at North Park.
Coach Scanlon said Saturday's game game was dedicated to Alex Klucik and the Klucik family. After Cameron Joyce's TD run he pointed directly to the sky as a tribute to the former Shamrock football player who died in a car accident in August, 2010.
