The medical device manufacturer Arthrex has announced that it has chosen a site in Ave Maria for its planned expansion of its manufacturing facilities.

A statement from Arthrex Friday said the company planned to build a 160,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Ave Maria off Oil Well Rd., and hoped to begin construction by the end of the year. The company said that 150 people will be hired initially to staff the plant and spokesman Scott Price said that Arthrex hoped to hire "hundreds more" employees in subsequent years.

Developer Barron Collier has set aside several hundred acres in Ave Maria off Oil Well Rd. for commercial development. Blake Gable, the president of Barron Collier's real estate operations, said in a statement that the company is "excited" about the plans to build the facility in Ave Maria.

"We believe the economic impact of their expansion will be a great benefit to southwest Florida as they continue to create hundreds of high-wage jobs in this community," Mr. Gable said.

Arthrex had previously said that it had been looking to expand its manufacturing capabilities and was looking at sites in Collier and Lee counties, as well as elsewhere.
