The next few weeks at Ave Maria will offer a wide variety of free or inexpensive classical music performances.
The two weeks of music begin the evening of Monday, March 14, with a concert in the Ave Maria Oratory by the Chamber Singers from Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, and culminates Sunday, March 27, with a full choral and orchestral performance of Verdi's Requiem by Opera Naples in the Golisano Field House. All are welcome at every event.
Following are the scheduled events:
The Chamber Singers of Franklin and Marshall College of Lancaster, PA, will perform a concert of sacred music from the last two centuries Monday, March 14 at 7 p.m. in the Ave Maria Oratory. The Chambers Singers are a select choral ensemble of about 20 young men and women. They last performed at Ave Maria two years ago. Free admission.
Internationally-acclaimed classical pianist John Robilette (left) will play a concert of Catholic composers Wednesday, March 16 at 8 p.m. in the private dining room of the Ave Maria University student union. The St. Agnes High School Choir from St. Paul, MN, will perform a concert of sacred music in the oratory Tuesday, March 22 at 7 p.m. The choir, which is touring southwest Florida, also will sing at the 12:30 Mass Sunday, March 20. Free admission to the concert.
The Freecastle Duo, composed of young musicians Hirono Sugimoto and violin and Philip Lawrence Borter, (right) will play a concert of works from a half-dozen different composers Wednesday, March 23, at 8 p.m. in the private dining room of the AMU student union. The Ave Maria Hometown Band and Orchestra will give a free concert of varied works in La Piazza in the Ave Maria town center Saturday, March 26, beginning at 1 p.m. The program includes popular and classical selections by the band and orchestra as well as solo performances. Later Saturday, the band will hold a fundraising dinner at the Donahue Academy. Also that day, the Ave Maria Choirs will be part of a combined choir of 170 voices with theSouthwest Florida Symphony Orchestra choir to perform Mahler's 2nd Symphony "Resurrection" at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at the Barbara Mann Hall in Fort Myers. Click here for more information.
To cap the two weeks of music, Opera Naples will give a special performance of Verdi's Requiem Sunday, March 27, at 2:30 p.m. in the Golisano Field House. More than 120 performers, including an orchestra and soloists from Opera Marseille, the San Francisco Opera and the Gilmmerglass Opera, will participate. Seats in the bleachers are $5, with a maximum of $25 per family, and seats on the floor are $25 each.
