About 35 people gathered at the town's fashion shop in the early evening, where they mingled, enjoyed light refreshments, and checked out the latest clothes and accessories featured in the store. Mary Schmidtt, president of the society, began the auction by giving a brief explanation of the need for the funds, and pointing out that the debate team, even with its lack of a formal advisor, has won two different trophies from three competitions.
Miss Schmidtt and Lucia Gallardo took turns introducing the new and gently used gowns, some of which had been donated by the Bridal Nook in North Carolina, as AMU students modeled them. The bidding that followed was often lively.
A raffle ended the evening, with prizes including gift certificates and a basket of beauty items donated by Mary Kay Cosmetics.
