A second Community Emergency Response Training program is being offered in Ave Maria beginning Sept. 9. CERT prepares community residents to assist in the event of disasters, medical and other emergencies, light search and rescue and other events.

"I highly recommend it to everyone," says Daniel Dix, owner of The Bean of Ave Maria, who was among the first 21 people who went through the training last fall. "It is important for the Ave Maria community to be prepared for potential disasters. We are very lucky to have the CERT training offered here."

Residents in their late teens or older are eligible to participate in the course, which is free and involves a few hours a week of training over an eight-week period.

"We teach people what to expect in emergencies," says Chief Wayne Watson of the Collier County EMS services. "This includes basic First Aid, fire suppression techniques and basic rescue and treatment."

Anyone interested can sign up at the Fitness Center, 5076 Annunciation Circle #103. The course will be from 6-8 p.m. in Room 1025 of the Academic Building. More information on the CERT program overall can be found here.

For Daniel Dix, the training not only prepares him to help in a community emergency, but is practical in other ways as well. "I have three young kids and I really feel, because of my CERT training, that I can take care of them better if they were to get hurt."
