In a letter that the Naples Daily News made available on its website, Ave Maria Development said the series "was based almost exclusively on three factual errors, omissions and misrepresentations." The letter, signed by the AMD executive committee of Tom Monaghan, Paul Roney, Blake Gable and Lamar Gable, says that the main premise of the series - that the developers could control the Ave Maria Stewardship Community District "in perpetuity" - is false and that, in fact, the transition of control would occur when about 70 percent of the planned homes are sold. "In continuing to claim that the residents of Ave Maria will remain ‘without a vote, now and forever,' the Naples Daily News is perpetuating information that is false and damaging," the letter states. The members of the executive committee asked the Naples Daily News to respond to its request by noon Wednesday. It was not immediately known what the response was.
The naplesnews.com site also has a copy of a document on the letterhead of Ave Maria Development's law firm outlining specifically how a transition of control would occur. That document is here.
Along with Ave Maria Development, town resident Kathy Delaney, who was quoted in the Naples Daily News series, is also upset. In a letter to the developers that she also distributed to many residents, Mrs. Delaney said she was "grossly misrepresented" in the articles as "an unhappy homeowner."
"I think something wonderful is happening in Ave Maria, despite the constant attacks and negative reporting," Mrs. Delaney said.
