blessingfood5With baskets of Easter goodies piled high on a table at the entrance to the Oratory, Fr. Robert Tatman gave a traditional blessing of Easter food for about a dozen families the morning of Holy Saturday.

"We go through 40 days of fasting and abstinence, and this is a chance to show the symbolic significance of the joy of Easter," Fr. Tatman, the parish administrator, said after the ceremony.

"The tradition is to have this on Holy Saturday before or after the Easter vigil," he said. "The origins are in Eastern Europe, particularly in Poland, and the Church has a ritual for it because it spread all over everywhere."

"It's an opportunity to share the fruits of the Lord's Passion," he said.

"And the kids love it!"
