Sen. Sam Brownback came to Ave Maria Thursday as part of his "Floridians of Faith" tour on behalf of John McCain. Sen. Brownback spent about an hour outside The Bean, mingling with a group of about 200 people, signing autographs and urging everyone to do everything they could to elect Sen. McCain.
One of the key differences between the candidates, Sen. Brownback said, is the type of judges they would appoint to the Supreme Court and other federal courts. "That's how abortion became a constitutional right," he said.
"Think about what the courts could do on abortion and the redefinition of marriage"
Ave Maria University Founder Tom Monaghan introduced Sen. Brownback, calling him the "most qualified person to be president." Mr. Monaghan had backed the Kansas senator's bid for the Republican presidential nomination.
Before the rally at The Bean, Sen. Brownback visited the oratory with Mr. Monaghan. Although he had seen pictures of it, this was his first time inside. "It's gorgeous," he said, "A very peaceful place."
