publix2The Publix supermarket in Ave Maria is on track to open in late June or early July, company representative Shannon Patten said Friday. The store is getting its finishing touches and most of the major construction work has been completed. At right, a construction worker walks past what will be the deli counter.

Ms. Patten said the Publix will be approximately 28,000 square feet, about half the size of the nearest Publix in the Pebblebrooke Plaza at the corner of Collier Blvd. and Immokalee Rd. "But it will have full-service meat, deli, bakery and seafood departments as well as a small floral center," she said. The store also will have a Greenwise organic/health food area, she said, and will sell beer and wine. There will be no pharmacy, which she said is normal for a store of this size.

Publix will begin accepting applications for employment at the store in early May, Ms. Patten said. The store will employ approximately 100 people and current employees at other stores will be given the first opportunity to work at the Ave Maria location. Anyone interested in applying can submit an application at the Pebblebrooke store beginning in early May.
