The Ave Maria School of Law has announced that one of its third-year students, Anthony Alt, has been awarded the Fourth Annual William E. Swope Antitrust Prize. The writing competition sponsored by the international law firm Jones Day awards a $10,000 prize for an essay applying practical analysis to a current antitrust problem.

Alt, who will graduate this May, submitted a paper on the insurance industry's federal antitrust exemption and recent proposals to overturn it. He received his award in Washington, D.C. at a reception hosted by Jones Day and also attended the 2009 Spring Meeting of the American Bar Association Antitrust Section as the firm's guest.

Alt serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Ave Maria Law Review and has accepted a position as a judicial clerk for Minnesota Supreme Court Justice G. Barry Anderson following his graduation.

The Swope Prize, created in 2005, honors former U.S. Justice Department Antitrust Division official and Jones Day partner Bill Swope, who pioneered a fact-intensive approach to antitrust analysis. Previous winners include a graduate of Yale Law School and students at the University of California's Boalt Hall and the University of Chicago School of Law.  Jones Day has more than 2,400 lawyers around the world, including a substantial antitrust practice.
