The Donahue Academy Shamrocks of Ave Maria squeaked into the football playoffs with a convincing 48-32 win Friday night against Academy of the Lakes in Land of Lakes, FL.
Donahue finishes the season with a 6-4 record and qualified for the 8th and final playoff spot. The team will face a tough challenge in the playoffs this weekend when they meet top-seeded Clearwater Academy, which is undefeated this season.
“This was like a playoff game for us,” said head coach Rich Scanlon. “We knew we had to win to have a chance at the playoffs. Last night’s game summed up our season. We face lots of adversity and continued to persevere.”
Donahue was missing four offensive starters and five defensive starters due to injuries. They also will not have the team’s only senior, Mat Klein, for the playoffs because of a high ankle sprain.
In the game Friday night, Elias Allan threw for 242 yards and 3 touchdowns and added six tackles on defense. Mark Cheffers threw 2 touchdown passes, ran for 1 touchdown and caught a TD pass. Dominic Allan scored four touchdowns and led the team’s defense with 12 tackles, 3 for a loss. Sean Doman recovered an onside kick and added 10 tackles on defense, five for losses.
The date and time of the playoff game will be determined early in the week.
