The Donahue Academy Shamrocks are coming off a near-perfect season that took them all the way to the state championships for the Florida Christian Association of Private and Parochial Schools (FCAPPS). Their hearbreaking loss in the championship game was the team's only defeat last year.
The new season kicks off for the Shamrocks Friday night, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. when the Oasis Sharks from Cape Coral come to Ave Maria's North Park. "It should be a very competitive game," said head coach Rich Scanlon.
The Shamrocks who take the field Friday will be missing some of its more experienced players who graduated last year.
"Matt Klein (right) is our only senior this year," Coach Scanlon said. "The younger guys will have the opportunity to receive valuable game experience. The guys have conditioned hard and are prepared for the first game."
Getting to the championship game this year will require overcoming stiff competition, some of which will involve hours of travel.
"This season we play our toughest schedule since I arrived," Coach Scanlon said." All road games will be between three and four hours away, and we play previous state champions or playoff teams every week. I look forward to the challenge."
The school plans to stream video of this year's road games, which will be shown at the Pub of Ave Maria. There also is a website with the team's schedule, roster and other information available by clicking here.
