Dan Guernsey, who has led the Donahue Academy since its founding in 2007, will be moving to a new role at Ave Maria University this summer, but parents, faculty, students and friends let him know Saturday how grateful they are for his accomplishments at the k-12 school.
The school's enrollment and stature has grown steadily under Dr. Guernsey's leadership and it is the only independent Catholic school to earn official affiliation with the Diocese of Venice.
About 100 people turned out Saturday evening at an event put on by the Donahue board of directors to recognize Dr. Guernsey's work. Among those expressing their thanks were the school's patron, Tom Monaghan, and longtime board member Paul Roney, both of whom sent letters of appreciation that were read at the event. On Friday afternoon, students gathered at the school to thank Dr. Guernsey and presented him with a new bicycle as a gift.
Dr. Guernsey will begin his new job as a professor and chair of the education department at Ave Maria University later this summer.
