Three players on the Donahue Academy of Ave Maria 7-man football team were recognized Saturday with state awards from the Florida Christian Association of Private and Parochial Schools.
Trophies for best at their position went to Matt Houde at split end and Luke Scheck at defensive back while Marco Vega received the state Sportsmanship Award.
Head Coach Rich Scanlon also was named Coach of the Year. The Shamrocks were 12-1 for the year, with their only loss coming in the state championship game. (Pictured, coaches Don Stuller and Rich Scanlon with Luke Scheck, Marco Vega and Ben Houde, representing his brother Matt)
"Hard work and dedication has brought me to this point," said Marco Vega. "I thank God for giving me the mom that I have because she is the one who taught me all of these values."
Luke Scheck also thanked his family for their support, as well as his teammates and coaches.
"It has been a blessing and an honor to be part of this team," said Matt Houde, who also was named best at his position the previous season. "I wouldn't have traded the players I played with or the coaches I played for, for anybody in the world."
