Jon Scharfenberger was an "everyday hero," whose passion for the pro-life cause inspired so many others, his mother, Anna Scharfenberger, said Thursday night at a dinner raising money for scholarships in her son's name.
"Wake up every day and ask what you can do for the pro-life mission," Mrs. Scharfenberger said. "Take action at least once a day. That's how we can remember Jon."
The young man, a pro-life leader on the Ave Maria University campus, died in a car accident in the fall of 2011 while working for the Students for Life organization, which he joined after graduating from AMU earlier that year.
More than 300 people attended the dinner Thursday night, which raises money for scholarships for AMU students who exemplify Jon's dedication to the pro-life cause.
The dinner, sponsored by the Ave Maria Naples Founders club, also heard an upbeat assessment of progress in the town of Ave Maria from Barron Collier Chief Operating Officer Brian Goguen (for full story on Mr. Goguen's remarks click here) and entertainment was provided by the Ave Maria University Glee Club.
AMU founder Tom Monaghan addressed the dinner briefly before Mrs. Scharfenberger spoke, and he recalled her the previous year.
"Of all the emotional experiences I've had, one of the most profound was Anna Scharfenberger talking about her son, " Mr. Monaghan said.
"My objective in founding Ave Maria University was to get as many souls to heaven as possible, and Jon was first."
