Donahue Girls Basketball Team Capping Standout Season

rjdgirlsbb-450The Donahue Academy girls basketball team has brought home the school's first trophy in Florida High School Athletics Association (FHSAA) play, placing second in district playoffs and earning a berth in the regional playoffs beginning Thursday, Feb. 6.

"The scouting reports from opposing coaches on our team tell the story," Head Coach Tim Donohue said. "Scrappy, never gives up, aggressive defense, moves the ball."

That tenacious play led to a 12-10 record this season, mostly against teams from bigger schools with more established programs. This is just the first year that Donahue teams were eligible to play in the FHSAA, which governs high school athletics for most schools in Florida.

The Donahue girls we assured a spot in the regional playoffs when they beat Southwest Florida Christian Academy earlier last week. They were runners-up in the district finals, losing to Sarasota Christian Academy 47-34 Friday night. Their trophy as runners-up is the first for any Donahue team in an FHSAA-sanctioned event.

Now, it's on to play an away game Thursday, Feb. 6, at Seacrest Country Day in Naples, and Coach Donohue likes the team's chances.

"We beat them twice this year, once in the regular season and once in a tournament in December. I believe if we can shut down Seacrest's point guard and work for high percentage shots we will prevail," which would put the team in the regional semi-finals.
