New Leadership for Ave Maria Quasi Parish

tatman1-200Fr. Robert Tatman, who has been in charge of the Quasi Parish of Ave Maria Oratory since its formation in 2008, will soon be leaving to take up new responsibilities in Port Charlotte, he announced Tuesday.

"I'll certainly miss the wonderful people in Ave Maria," Fr. Tatman said, adding that, once again, he will celebrate the Donahue Academy graduation Mass before he leaves for San Antonio Parish in Port Charlotte June 10. "I have a lot to do before then," he said.

Fr. Tatman said his replacement in Ave Maria will be Fr. Cory Mayer, who currently is parochial vicar at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice. He also serves as the diocesan director of vocations, a position he is expected to keep after he moves to Ave Maria. Fr. Mayer grew up in New York State, not far from Buffalo, and was ordained in the fall of 2009. He is a graduate of Regina Apostolorum University in Rome. (below right, Fr. mayer-200The reassignments are part of a number of new postings for many priests. A call to Fr. Mayer from The Ave Herald was not immediately returned.

Fr. Tatman's new parish, San Antonio Parish in Port Charlotte, is, judging from its web site – and its eight-page bulletin filled with news from its many and varied parish activities– an extremely lively and vibrant faith community.

A partial listing of aspects of parish life there include youth, bereavement, health, Bible study and prayer blanket ministries; finance, pastoral council, social justice, liturgy and "safe environment" committees; and organizations such as Catholic Charities, Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Women's Guild, Mature Singles, and the One in the Spirit Prayer Group.

Although his new parish offers four Sunday masses and a Saturday night Vigil Mass, there is no Extraordinary Form Mass in Latin and Fr. Tatman says he has no plans to start one in the immediate future.
