Two standout players for the Ave Maria baseball team, plus their coach, garnered three of the top four honors awarded by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Sun Conference Monday night at a ceremony in Fort Myers.
The Gyrenes finished their best season ever with a record of 37-17 and qualified for the first time for the Sun Conference playoffs, which were scheduled to begin in Fort Myers Tuesday afternoon.
AMU shortstop Alex Sanchez (pictured at far right), a senior from Hialeah, FL, was named the conference Player of the Year, batting .409 and scoring 55 runs in 54 games.
Standout junior pitcher Joe Bocchino (pictured far left) was the conference Pitcher of the Year. He went 10-1 with a 1.81 ERA while striking out 62 and holding opponents to a meager .198 batting average.
Cach Shawn Summe (center in picture) took home the Coach of the Year award, for which he was runner-up last year.
Five other players were named to the all-conference team: Gabe Loweree was named to First Team all conference, while right hander Ethan Striz, catcher Conor Sullivan, second-baseman Aaron Pigna, and third-baseman Trace McDermott all landed on the second team.
Weather permitting, AMU was scheduled to face Southeastern University in the playoffs at 3 p.m. Tuesday at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers.
