If the Ave Maria University men's basketball team has shown weaknesses in the first two games of the season, the ability to score points hasn't been one of them.

The Gyrenes scored more than 100 points in each of their first two games of the season, thumping DeVry University 104-58 in their home opener Saturday at the Golisano Field House in Ave Maria after dispatching Edward Waters 101-89 to begin the season Friday night on the road.

In the win over DeVry, every one of the Gyrene players scored and had at least one offensive rebound. Leading the way were Wendell Powell, with 16 points and eight rebounds, and John Russo with 15 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

The night before, in Jacksonville, senior Tyler Cutrer led the Gyrenes with 19 points that included an outstanding five out of six baskets from behind the three point line in only 22 minutes of play.

"It was a very hostile environment," said AMU head coach Jamon Copeland. "Our guys responded well, kept their composure, and came away with a solid road win."

Other notable performances against Edward Waters were from seniors Kiel Lewis and Dylan Fugate, as well as junior Akii Dean. Lewis and Dean each had 17 points on the day, while Fugate paced the Gyrenes with 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Fugate also made 11 free throws on the night.

The Gyrenes finish the weekend of three games Sunday with a matchup against Montreat College at 3 p.m. at the Golisano Field House.
