Football: AMU, Donahue at Opposite Ends of Lopsided Games

The Birmingham Southern College Panthers racked up a school-record 61 points Saturday in defeating Ave Maria University 61-14 in the opening game of the season for the Gyrenes. Right, Gyrenes pursue Isaac Nichols who scored four TDs for the Panthers (photo BSC).

AMU was shut out in the first half and scored all its points in the third quarter, on a 42-yard run by Rashad Kelley and a 53-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Drake Sunderland to Chris Fahey.

Back in Ave Maria, the Donahue Academy Shamrocks defense led by Joe Chmeilowski smothered Miami Christian 48-0 in a 7-man football game at North Park. It was the Shamrocks' third shutout of the season and their record now stands at 4-1.

Chmeilowski had 10.5 tackles and five sacks, Luke Scheck had 5.5 tackles and Nathan Gay had five tackles.

Gay also had three rushing touchdowns and Scheck had one as well. Matt Houde scored two TDs -- one on a kickoff return and another rushing -- and Lane Lawe had four carries for 34 yards and a rushing TD.

"It was a great team effort tonight," said Coach Rich Scanlon. "Everyone contributed and we were able to play all of our players."

Coach Scanlon is already looking ahead to next week's game, when the Shamrocks play powerhouse Grace Academy in Miami, a team which is undefeated and has not been scored on all season.

The Gyrenes play their next game at home next weekend against Southern Virginia University at Palmetto Ridge High School in Naples. Kickoff will be at 12:00 PM on Saturday, Sept. 22.
