The Ave Maria Stewardship Community District Board is at full strength again after the election Tuesday of Jay Roth to fill the term of Paul Roney, the former CFO of Ave Maria University who resigned from the board earlier this year after leaving his position at the university.
Mr. Roth has managed the Lutgert Insurance office in Ave Maria since it opened in 2007 and he is well known to town residents for his enthusiastic involvement in town events. He will serve the remainder of Mr. Roney's term, which expires in the fall of 2014.
Terms of three other board members – Chairman Tom Peek, Liesa Priddy and Doug Baird – expire this year and the AMSCD meeting Tuesday set a date of Nov. 6 for a landowners meeting that will hold elections for those board seats. The candidates who get the two largest vote totals will serve four-year terms and the third candidate will serve a two-year term.
Mrs. Priddy also serves as a commissioner on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and she briefed the meeting on the FWC's actions regarding the bear who has been a frequent visitor to Ave Maria neighborhoods for the last several months. Mrs. Priddy said FWC officers will try to scrare off the bear with non-lethal shotgun rounds and if he keeps coming back will attempt to tranquilize and relocate him.
The key to controlling bears, she said, is to eliminate garbage as an attractant and she said that the FWC and the town home owners' associations are working with the waste management company to set times for garbage pick-up that would make it easier for residents to put garbage out the day of pick-up instead of the night before, and also is looking at the possibility of more bear-resistant garbage containers.
An FWC representative will be holding information sessions at The Bean of Ave Maria, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, and 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14.
In other business the board:
- Approved the budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, which keeps homeowner assessments unchanged.
- Approved a request by Ave Maria University to use the irrigation water supply for a student farming club that will be planting crops on land northwest of the main campus.
- Set a meeting schedule for the next fiscal year that continues to hold meetings at 9 a.m. on the first Tuesday of the month, except for January, 2013, when the meeting is scheduled for Jan. 8.
