Scholarship Fund Established in Memory of AMU Graduate

Jon Scharfenberger just wanted to help people, his mother said at a gathering in Ave Maria. Now, a scholarship fund being established in the name of the young man who died in a car accident last fall may help many others attend the university where he was such an active part of the campus life for four years.

Ave Maria University announced the establishment of the Jon Scharfenberger Scholarship fund which will "keep the name alive," AMU Vice President of Institutional Advancement Lou Traina told people gathered at the Del Webb common room Wednesday.

The group heard from the student's mother, Anna Scharfenberger (right), and others who were close to him who talked about his many contributions during his four years at AMU and his commitment to pro-life causes. Jon went to work for the Students for Life organization after he graduated in May, 2011, and was killed returning home to Washington, D.C., from a pro-life conference in Georgia.

"Jon wanted to help and touch as many people as possible," Mrs. Scharfenberger said. "This would be a wonderful way to do that in his memory."
