musicaconfThe early Catholic liturgical music, Gregorian chant, has been enjoying somewhat of a resurgance lately and those interested in it can learn about its history and performance at a two-day conference open to the public at Ave Maria University April 13-14.

It's the fourth annual Gergorian Chant conference, put on by the Florida chapter of Musica Sacra, an annual organization dedicated to the study and preservation of sacred church music.

Susan Treacy, a music professor at AMU, will keynote this year's conference with an address on the topic of, Gregorian Chant and the Spiritual Riches of the Mass.

Previous conferences have drawn people from throughout Florida that have included lay people, scholars, musicians, students and clergy.

Ms. Treacy said that this year's conference will offer more intensive workshops in the areas of Semiology (Study of the ancient chant notation), Chironomy (Gregorian chant conducting), Chant in English, Church documents on sacred music, and history of sacred music in the 20th century.

Both the Ordinary and Extraordinary Forms of the Mass will be offered. The English-language Ordinary Form Mass will be the closing Mass of the conference, at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 14 (a vigil Mass for Sunday, April 15).
