The AMU women's basketball team had a short run in their first NAIA national tournament Thursday, losing their first game 66-58 to Eastern Oregon at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Lady Gyrenes, ranked number 11 nationally, could not hold an early lead and shot only 31.8 percent as a team. Their standout player, Sun Conference Player of the Year Sandy Jenkins, battled foul trouble in the second half and fouled out with 8:06 remaining in the game. She had just one point.
Four Ave Maria women scored in double figures, led by Emily Huber with 12 points. Erika Derks and Tamica Mora had 11 apiece and Amy Myler had 10.
Ave Maria ends the season -- just the women's basketball program's fourth -- at 29-5. They finished first in the NAIA Sun Conference and won the conference tournament.
The women had planned to remain in Sioux City for a few days, even if they lost early, to continue doing volunteer work at local schools, hospitals and senior residences.
