The Ave Maria University women's basketball team beat St. Thomas University 63-52 Saturday to win the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Sun Conference championship. The Lady Gyrenes will play in the NAIA national championships beginning March 7 in Iowa, and await the official announcement of tournament seedings Feb. 29.
The AMU women are 29-4 on the season and are ranked #14 in the NAIA.
AMU standout Sandy Jenkins (right) caught fire in the second half with 18 points and earned the tournament's Most Valuable Player award. Earlier in the week, Jenkins won the conference's award for most valuable player of the season at a dinner that also honored coach Bob Batson as the conference coach of the year.
