More Space, More Students for Donahue Academy's 4th Year Print E-mail
Friday, 30 July 2010 12:39

donahueschool1Students and teachers are still on summer break, but there is plenty of activity inside Ave Maria's Rhodora Donahue Academy.

Workmen are busy building out space on the second floor to accommodate another record enrollment of more than 200 students. Although the school was built as a two-story structure, only the first floor was finished when the school was built in 2007.

When students return Aug. 16, they'll find the upstairs will have two new classrooms, bathrooms, an elevator, and an athletic room for workouts and weight training.

Enrollment at the k-12 school has grown steadily since the doors opened to 131 students three years ago. Now, Headmaster Dan Guernsey says, there will be at least 210 students enrolled for the 2010-2011 academic year, and applications are still being accepted.

Dr. Guernsey said the school has hired faculty for three new positions created to accommodate the school's growth: high school humanities, which will be taught by Tyler Graham, middle school humanities, taught by Pam DeWitt, and an Academic Counselor and Resource Teacher, Jennifer Barley. The school is also seeking to fill two openings created by resignations of two teachers whose plans changed over the summer -- 1st grade teacher Christine Huber and k-12 art teacher Krystal Gates. Anyone interested in applying can send a resume to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The Donahue Academy also has a new coach for its 6-on-6 football squad that will begin practicing next week. He's Rich Scanlon, a recent addition to the Ave Maria University Admissions department, who has more than 10 years of football coaching experience at the high school and college levels.
