 The marble sculpture of the Annunciation, now under way at Ave Maria University, will be placed in historical context Saturday, Feb. 20, in one of two free, public lectures delivered at the university by noted art historian Dr. John Spike (right).
Dr. Spike is an authority on Renaissance and Baroque art. His first lecture, at 10 a.m. in the academic building lecture hall, is titled The Fundamentals of the History of Christian Art. It is based on Dr. Spike’s graduate course of the same title at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum and the European University in Rome. The monuments of Italian art and architecture are discussed in the context of the Christian message as expressed by artists ranging in date from the Catacombs to Caravaggio. Different fundamentals of Christian art are identified including, narration, symbolism, abstraction, power, miracle and love.
The second lecture, at 1:30 p.m., is The History of the Annunciation in Art. The Annunciation is one of the most frequent subjects of artistic representation in Christian art, particularly during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. This lecture will include the Annunciation of Ave Maria, putting the monumental project into historical context.
Seating for both lectures is on a first-come basis.
