The Annunciation has always had special significance for Ave Maria, and this year the Festival of the Arts is sponsoring a poetry contest that will award a $1,000 prize for the best poem about the Angel Gabriel's announcement to Mary that she had been chosen to be the mother of the Savior who was about to come into the world.
The competition is open to everyone, and the winner will be announced at the university's Festival of the Arts, March 28.
"Poetry was a surprisingly popular aspect of last year's festival," said Jane Healy, the festival's co-chair. "Because we received so many submissions for a general poetry contest last year, we decided to invite poets from across the country to create a poem that honors The Annunciation, the university's special feast day."
Poems can be in any style, including contemporary, and need to have The Annunciation as the topic. Submissions must be in English, typed and no longer than 120 lines, including spaces between stanzas. Only hard copies may be submitted. The poet's name should not appear anywhere on the sheet with the poem and illustrations or ornamentation should not be included. The author's contact information must be included in a cover letter. Submissions must be received by March 1, 2010. Poems should be sent to Marylin Krepf, 5955 Seton Way, Ave Maria, FL 34142.
