DESCRIPTION:<p><span style='font-size: 1em\;'>Professor John M. Rist\, the 
 first occupant of the Fr. Kurt Pritzl Chair of Philosophy at the Catholic 
 University of America\, and author of fifteen books and dozens of importan
 t scholarly articles\, will give the Third Annual Aquinas Lecture on Monda
 y\, Jan. 28\, at 5 pm in the Lecture Hall of the Ave Maria University Acad
 emic Building\, on the theme\, 'Must Morality Be Dependent on God?' The le
 cture is free and open to the public.</span></p>\n<p>Professor Rist was ed
 ucated in classics at Trinity College\, Cambridge. He taught Greek at Univ
 ersity College in the University of Toronto from 1959 to 1969\, and from 1
 969 to 1980 was a professor of classics at the University of Toronto. He t
 aught from 1980 to 1983 as Regius Professor of Classics at the University 
 of Aberdeen\, and returned to the University of Toronto\, where he was pro
 fessor of classics and philosophy from 1983 to 1996\, with a cross-appoint
 ment to St. Michael's College from 1983 to 1990. In 1997\, Rist became pro
 fessor emeritus of the University of Toronto in 1997. He has been part-tim
 e visiting professor at the Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum in Rome s
 ince 1998.</p>\n<p>In 1976 Rist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society 
 of Canada\, and in 1991 he was elected a life member of Clare Hall\, Cambr
 idge. In 1995 he was the Lady Davis Visiting Professor in Philosophy at th
 e Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Among Rist's books are: Man\, Soul and B
 ody: Essays in Ancient Thought from Plato to Dionysius (1996)\, Augustine:
  Ancient Thought Baptized (1994)\, The Mind of Aristotle (1989)\, Platonis

 re is fittingly given on the very feast day of St. Thomas Aquinas. The two
  previous Aquinas Lecturers were AMU alumna Professor Therese Scarpelli Co
 ry (Seattle University)\, and Fr. Ron Tacelli (Boston College).</p>

  Votapek is the gold medalist of the first Van Cliburn International Piano
  Competition and winner of the prestigious Naumberg Award. Born in Milwauk
 ee\, he studied at Northwestern University\, the Manhattan School of Music
  and the Julliard School. Mr. Votapek has made hundreds of appearances wit
 h most of the major American orchestras\, including sixteen appearances wi
 th the Chicago Symphony. He has made a special commitment to Latin America
  where he has toured every other year for four decades. In the United Stat
 es\, his solo recitals have taken place in Carnegie Hall\, Chicago's Orche
 stra Hall\, Washington's Kennedy Center\, and on numerous college campuses
 . His chamber music experience includes concerts with The Julliard\, Fine 
 Arts\, New World and Chester String Quartets.<br /><br />Paul Votapek has 
 been a member of the Naples (FL) Philharmonic since 1988 and was chosen by
  Music Director Christopher Seaman to be its principal clarinetist in 1996
 . He has appeared as soloist with the Naples Philharmonic on four occasion
 s.<br /><br />Geoffrey Day is currently in his eighteenth season as a viol
 inist with the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. Mr. Day received his Bachelo
 r of Music from the University of Michigan\, where he studied with Ruggier
 o Ricci\, and earned a Master of Music from Michigan State University as a
  student of I-Fu Wang. Since moving to Florida in 1994\, Mr. Day has perfo
 rmed frequently as member of the Neapolitan Quartet and as a recitalist wi
 th his wife\, pianist Lan Lam. He is a founding member of the Botticelli Q
 uartet\, the Aurore Piano Trio and most recently Neapolitan Baroque\, an e
 nsemble dedicated to historically informed performance with period instrum
 ents.</p>

 nary in Argentina\, he was assigned in 2010 to the community of Miles Chri

 e USA preaching Retreats and Days of Recollection\, giving conferences and
  providing spiritual direction so as to help the laity to fervently pursue
  sanctification\, particularly college students.</p>
