  Candelaria\, Ph.D.\nAssociate Professor of Musicology      \nThe Universi
 ty of Texas at Austin\nspeaking on  \n“Bernardino de Sahagún’s Psalmodia C
 hristiana and Catholic Formation among the Mexica in 16th-Century New Spai
 n”\nHow was the “Old Evangelization” implemented?\nIn 1583\, Pedro Ocharte
  published the first book of vernacular sacred song in the Americas—the Ps
 almodia Christiana by Bernardino de Sahagún\, a Spanish missionary of the 
 Franciscan order.  Sahagún composed his songbook to promote the formation 
 of Catholic communities among the Mexica (more commonly known as the “Azte
 cs”).  This presentation will explore the Church’s “Old Evangelization” of
  the New World and the role played by music in that evangelization.\n All 
 are welcome.
